Cervical Facet Joint Pain

Cervical facet joint pain (also known as zygapophyseal joint pain or facet arthropathy) occurs when the joints either side of your neck become irritated or inflamed.

Facet joints control the direction and degree of movement between the vertebrae. There are two facet joints (left and right) in each spinal segment (where two bones meet).

Cervical facet joint pain occurs due to;

  • Hypermobility (i.e., too much movement). Typically, from ligamentous sprains or poor muscular control/strength.

  • Hypomobility (i.e., too little movement). Typically, from joint degeneration or protective muscle spasm.

Facet joint pain is one of the most common causes of spinal pain and can be diagnosed with high quality Physiotherapy.

Posture, stress and working environments strongly contribute to neck pain and shoulder pain. This is why neck pain can persist for long periods or re-occur regularly. We pride ourselves on injury treatment and prevention, meaning that we will determine the diagnosis, the cause and teach you how to prevent the injury from returning.

Melbourne Physio Clinic is the leading Physiotherapy clinic in the Melbourne CBD and have the credentials and study to ensure that you receive the best care possible.
